5 Killer SEO Tips To Get More Website Traffic

Traffic is vital to a successful blog. Without a steady stream of traffic you have to work much harder at promoting your blog content on other channels to make sure it gets exposure. We should work smarter, not harder… as the saying goes.

An easy way to get more traffic to your blog for FREE is to practice good SEO (search engine optimization) when building pages and writing new posts. Here are a few tips to put you on the right track!

1. Use Keywords in Your Meta Tags

Pages without meta tags have a harder time ranking. Not sure what a meta tag is? The meta tags are a quick way for the search engines to determine what your site is about before they “read” the rest of the content on the page. The 3 tags you need to know are:

• Meta Title – This is the title of the page and shows up at the top of the search browser. If you want your page to rank for specific keywords, use them in your meta title. This tag is visible in the search results.

• Meta Description – This tag gives a brief description on what your page is about and is also visible in search results.

• Meta Keywords – The meta keywords tag is often neglected because it doesn’t help your page rank in Google. This tag also is not visible in search engines. However it can still boost your rankings in Yahoo & Bing so it should not be ignored.

2. Add New Content Frequently

Search engines like fresh content. Think of it this way… if you had friends come over for dinner would you rather serve them old bread from the back of your pantry or new fresh bread hot from the oven? Google, Yahoo & Bing feel the same way. If your website is old and stale the chances they will find it relevant enough to serve up in results are small.

Also, make sure the new content you are adding is relevant to the audience you want to attract. If you have a blog about vacuum cleaners, don’t add a new blog post about what you had for dinner the night before. The more on point your posts are the stronger of an authority you can become in your space.

3. Get Some Link Juice!

This isn’t the kind of juice that can be found next to the oj in your local grocery store. Link juice is in reference to the power that comes from having other sites link back to yours. As you get quality sites to do this, the engines will start to see your site as more valuable and you can start to move up in rank. On the flip side, if you gather these links through shady practices, or just flat out buying them, the search engines can penalize your site for not being genuine. Good link building takes time, but when done right has a very long lasting effect.

Various types of links are:

• Direct Links – These links look like the webpage they are pointing to. ex – www.Mybloggerclub.com

• Links w/ Anchor Text – These links appear to be a keyword but take you to a webpage. ex – SEO Expert

• External Links – These are links from a domain other than your own. Direct links, links w/ anchor text can all be external links.

• Internal Links – These are links from your own website to your own website. You can have direct links, links w/ anchor text & deep links to your own site. While internal links can help the engines decide what pages are most important on your website, external links give you a vote of popularity which provides more value overall.

4. Be Social in Your Niche… or Anywhere at All

Building online community is more important now than ever. Remember my earlier statement about how a lack of traffic means you have to work harder to promote your blog content? If you are social online you can easily make connections with others who are happy to promote your content for you. That social community becomes a support system which can make your goal of getting more traffic much easier.

Back in my personal finance blogger days, I scouted out all the top spots where the other personal finance bloggers connected online. I then made an active attempt to socialize with and support their blogs and other content. After a few months I had some really good connections that were happy to promote my content without me even asking. Because I was just starting out, they had much larger audiences than I did. One tweet from them reached thousands of followers compared to my hundreds. I was able to increase my outreach, with no additional work on my end, just by having a few good friends. Now remember my other prior statement… work smarter, not harder!

5. Don’t Be Afraid to “Pay to Play”

I know what you are thinking… why would she suggest paying for traffic when this post is all about getting free traffic through SEO? Let me explain. Paid ads can be a great supplement to boost your brand recognition which can lead to more free traffic. I would suggest purchasing ads that follow a PPC (pay-per-click) model. That way you only spend money if an interested party clicks on your ad.

The down side is that you may spend some money. The good side is a lot of times you won’t spend much of anything but will have the added benefit of the impressions from your ad. For example, there is an online marketer who’s ads constantly appear while I’m on Facebook. I’ve only clicked on their ads once, but the fact that are always in my face puts that business in the front of my mind when I think of their niche. This person isn’t paying for the impression of their ad being shown to me. Yet, when I search naturally I tend to think of them just because they are always around.
